Successful policies in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland that require a customer to be charged extra for a plastic bag are now moving on to Great Britain in hopes that the larger country will reflect the 80 % reduction in plastic bag consumption that its smaller neighbors have seen over the last three years.Studies show that adding a charge to these bags will greatly reduce the amount being sent to landfills, and experts hope that it will also encourage British society to become more environmentally conscious. More studies are being conducted by researchers at the The Open University that relate to the development of alternative biodegradable materials. These could potentially replace fossil fuel derived polyethylene single-use carrier bags in the future. In other words, researchers hope to develop a new type of biodegradable single-use plastic carrier bag that is recyclable, biodegradable and will have no harmful effects on plants or animals.
The issue of plastic bags has prevailed for many years. They are a huge concern in relation to the environment: they greatly affect sea life, pollute waterways, and cause terrible habitat destruction, with highly negative effects on plant and animal life. It is estimated that one bag alone has the potential to unintentionally kill one animal per every three months due to digestion or inhalation. They also take hundreds of years to break down. However, plastic bags are cheap and lightweight, making them ideal for shoppers. Hopefully by adding a cost to plastic bags, it will encourage customers to utilize reusable or cloth bags.
