Elephants have been under attack since humans first discovered the value of their tusks. Diminishing elephant numbers greatly threatened the survival of the iconic species. The infamous ivory trade has been banned in most parts of the world - and soon, Hong Kong, home to the world's largest legal ivory market, will begin making gains to ban its ivory trade. Likely spurred by last September's agreement between U.S. President Obama and China’s President Xi Jinping to stop the domestic ivory trade, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying, recently announced plans to ban the domestic ivory trade during his 2016 Policy Address, an annual speech that lays out the year’s policy agenda. Hong Kong's population shows overwhelming support for these policies, according to recent surveys and to a recent unanimous agreement among Hong Kong's legislative body that the city's ivory trade should be banned. These events show major steps for conservationists and for the dwindling numbers of earth's elephants.
